Václav Šilha’s exhibition, On the Waves of Photography

01/18/2018

Václav Šilha’s exhibition, Na vlnách fotografie (On the Waves of Photography), brings together images of native cultures with life in the Antarctic. From mid-January until almost the end of February, Václav Šilha, holder of a number of Czech Press Photo awards and joint author of a number of books, will be showcased in the Czech Photo Centre gallery.

“Šilha, whose images are regularly published both domestically and in international magazines such as BBC Wildlife Magazine and National Geographic, is mainly known for his photographs taken during his travels seeking out animals. This time, however, the Czech Photo Centre is focusing on his work capturing disappearing native cultures in Asia, Africa and South America, in contrast with black and white photographs of the southernmost continent of our planet,” explains Veronika Souralová, the Centre’s Director.

Thus, attention is focused in the On the Waves of Photography exhibition on the one hand on humankind and our position in various corners of the world, and on the other hand on black and white photos of Antarctica – a continent whose proud and inaccessible freezing bitterness still remains a challenge. Even in this part of the world, however, changes can occur quickly.

“Our planet is a complex whole in which many forms of life are disappearing and everything is closely interrelated. As such, it is logical that I have focused here on an animal species which we think stands above them all: on humankind and its culture,” explains exhibition author, Václav Šilha.

The On the Waves of Photography exhibition will be held in the Czech Photo Centre from 18 January to 25 February. It will be open every day except Mondays; from Tuesday to Friday always from 11am to 6pm, and on weekends from 10am until 6pm. Basic entrance is 80 CZK, or 40 CZK for concession tickets. The gallery is located roughly 100 metres from Nové Butovice metro station at Seydlerova 2835/4, Prague 5.

Šilha won second prize in the Czech Press Photo 2006 contest, first prize in Czech Press Photo for 2012, the Trigema Czech Press Photo award in 2014, and was nominated for the Czech Press Photo first prize in the video category in 2017. In 2012, he received the NSFF Gold Medal in the 16th international FIAP Biennal in Norway. He is also joint author of the books Divoká planeta (Wild Planet), Afrika v nás (Africa Within Us) and Afrika v nás II.
