MAYOR OF PRAGUE BOHUSLAV SVOBODA MET PHOTOGRAPHER

20th Sep 2011

On Tuesday, the 20th September at 12:30 pm, the Mayor of Prague, Bohuslav Svoboda, received a unique photographic collection How Handicapped Children Live in Prague from Milan Jaros, photographer for Respect magazine. The photographs are the result of the Grant of Prague – a one-year creative scholarship to photograph a current topic in the capital which was awarded by the Prague Town Hall as part of the 15th Czech Press Photo competition. While the previous grantees, well-known photographers Kucera, Cudlin, Sagl, Kuklik, Zatorsky, Kyndrova and others pursued architecture, new buildings, transport issues or life in the streets of the city, Milan Jaros focused on a topic which is quiet, not very visible but all the more sensitive – children, who rely on help from the society. The photographer, whose exhibition this year arouse a lot of public interest presented the photographs personally to the Mayor, who as doctor is very close to this problem. Every year the Grant of Prague photographic collection is created in two sets – one for the capital’s archive and one for the city’s representational exhibition purposes.

On the 20th September at midday, a small celebration took place at the residence of the Mayor of Prague. The Mayor, Bohuslav Svoboda, received from Milan Jaros, the 15th recipient of the Grant of Prague Czech Press Photo his set photographs resulting from his one-year grant on the theme How Handicapped People Live in Prague. Representatives of the media came to the ceremony and flooded their colleague Milan Jaros with light from their flashguns. As a doctor, the Mayor was interested in the subject of the photographs and Jaros commented on them in detail. photo: Liba Taylor

Already over the first picture, the Mayor revealed his interest in photography dating back to his youth and he asked Jaros to explain why he  presented his photographs in colour and not black and white... photo: Liba Taylor

The Mayor was visibly content with the results and he praised Jaros’ work as an important contribution to the visual history of Prague and informally talked to journalists about his young efforts when he and his father had a makeshift darkroom in the bathroom where they used to develop family pictures. Later it became useful when he had to document his scientific work.... photo: Liba Taylor
