Czech Press Photo 2011 through the eyes of visitors

11th Mar 2012

The thorough annual study of comments in the Czech Press Photo visitors’ book is important for the preparation of the following year’s contest and subsequent exhibition. This year again there are several dozens of pages of comments not only in Czech but also in many other languages, including a few exotic ones. Some of the most interesting are reactions of people who see the exhibition for the first time, clutching vouchers bought through the Internet, and who, with satisfaction, write in the visitors’ book expressing interest in other years of the competition. From the ongoing verbal survey conducted by the exhibition staff, the visitors are mostly of a younger generation. It appears that precisely this last exhibition, which put emphasis on thematic series, created enthusiastic responses, and despite some reservations about the exhibition showing human suffering, catastrophes and negative sides of life, the majority of people understand more and more that the duty of journalistic photography is to be mirror on life both at home and abroad. Here are some of the several hundred visitors’ comments:

As every year, the exhibition is impressive, educational, touching, breathless.... One realises that what is far away is also very near and that it effects us all; that “we all are one”.

Jitka K., Prague

Super exhibition! I got goose pimples over some photographs and I can’t get them out of my head, I have to come again.

Adela from Hradec K

This exhibition is a life-changing experience for me. Photographers, thank you for your testimony!

Zdenek Mauer, Moravia

The photographs are amazing! It’s a shame that we, people of the blue planet, sometimes live like that.

Juraj Hondzik, Presov

Everyone should see this exhibition and take away, as I am doing, the indelible feeling of beauty and complexity of the world, and also the ubiquitous pain and the knowledge that at least some people are not blind. I look forward to next year and hope that 2012 won’t provide too many tragic topics.

Mirka Vesela, Olomouc

A unique experience! Great! Thank you for this annual review of how we live!

Richard M., Most

2011 was loaded with unusual events... I’ll remember the photos forever.

S. Stollova, Pilsen

I come to Prague to see Czech Press Photo regularly. This year I am chilled. Thank you for the spectacular information about our life.

Petr Borovec, Frenstat

Bravo Czech Photographers! Send the exhibition to Japan.

Noriko Ura, Osaka

This is my first time and it is incredible, amazing, great and spectacular. I have something to think about.

Pavlina Prchalova, Dobrcice

...and I second it,

Lucie B., Teplice

Very emotional exhibition! I am touched by the strength of its testimony.

Elena Saratova, journalist from Sankt Petersburg

Fascinating, We don’t have words. Thank you.

John and Molly, New Zealand

Great exhibition!

Roland Martinsson, Norway

The photographs are the keepers of joy and sorrow that one experienced either directly or indirectly and now relives the experience again by looking at them. We are glad that the pictures don’t allow us to forget. We’ll come again next year...
